The Cherokee citizenship documents, 1880

Series of pamphlets giving the 1880 census of the nation by districts N.C. Cherokee, Shawnees and an 1880 roll of orphans. In the 1880 census section names, ages, sex and nativity are given with names arranged in rough alphabetical order by the head of house. Abbreviations used are N Cher (Native Cherokee, i.e by blood), A white (adopted white), A col (adopted colored), A del (adopted Delaware), A shaw (adoped Shawnee). These pamphlets are expecially valuable because of the annotations showing in some cases how citizenship was granted, changes in names, ages, or sex, names left off the roll and so on. The original schedule numbers referred to in these annotation were 1) Cherokee by blood, 2) Orphan's roll under age 16, 3) Rejection roll, 4) Those who claim Cherokee citizenship, 5) Intruders and 6) non-citizens - in nation by Permits.
