Elkano (Kane) Simmons (1814-1865) was born in Virginia, the son of James Simmons. His family migrated to Tennessee ca. 1820. He married Saraney Ripley of Washington County, Tennessee, ca. 1837. The had one daughter who died as a child. They were living in Sullivan County, Tennessee, in 1840. After Saraney's death, he married 2) Nancy Jane Pierce in 1844. Nancy had four children by a common law marriage to Isaac Rowe, they used the surname Pierce. Elkano and Nancy Simmons had eight children, 1847-1860. The family lived in Greene County, Tennessee, during the Civil War. The area was divided and so was the family. Elkano and one of his sons fought in the Union army. Two of his step sons were in the Confederate army; one was killed in 1863. Elkano returned from the war in 1865 and was killed by Confederate neighbors. Nancy Jane raised her family in Greene County, Tennessee. She died at the home of her son, Robert Simmons, in Shelby County, Alabama. Descendants listed lived in Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri, and elsewhere.
