John Whitney (1589-1673) was the son of Thomas and Mary Bray Whitney of Westminster, England, and a descendant of Sir Robert de Whitney (fl. 1368-1380). He and his wife, Elinor (1599-1659), had nine children, 1619-1643. The family immigrated to America in 1635 and settled in Watertown, Massachusetts. He died at Watertown. His granddaughter, Ruth Whitney (b. 1645) was born at Watertown. She married Enoch Lawrence (1649-1744). Line of descent is traced from them to the author, Evelyn Esther Olsen. She was born in 1903 at Onalaka, Wisconsin, and married Melvin R. Burlingame in 1923 at Minneapolis, Minnesota. They had two children, 1930-1944, born at Minneapolis.
