How do I create a free FamilySearch account?

Creating a free account enables you to gain the most value from FamilySearch.org. You do not have to create a family tree to use other features of FamilySearch.org.

Start here

  • People who have an account for a website or mobile app of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—Sign in to FamilySearch.org using the username and password of your Church Account.
  • Age limits—You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. Children ages 8 to 12 can create an account with parental permission.
  • Email or mobile phone—We recommend that each person register using a separate email address or mobile phone number to make it easier to recover a forgotten username or password.
  • Temple and family history consultants, staff in family history centers and libraries, and other helpers—Do not create accounts for other people. Instead, teach them how to sign up for themselves. If you need to do most of the typing, make sure the other person is with you to choose a preferred method of contact, to read the conditions-of-use statement, and to create a password.

Note: If you do not have your own email address, you can easily set one up for free with services such as Hotmail, Live Mail, Gmail, Yahoo, and others. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not recommend one provider over another. You can easily search the web for the best free email services to find out which one is best for you and to get instructions for how to set one up.
