Link an Existing FamilySearch Username to Facebook

A free FamilySearch account provides wider access to resources on the FamilySearch website. Now new and existing accounts have the option of using their Facebook sign-in information to create a free FamilySearch account.

If you use this option, your privacy remains protected:

  • The only thing Facebook knows is that you used your Facebook username and password to sign in to FamilySearch. No additional information about you or your family history is shared.
  • FamilySearch does not post any content to your Facebook feed unless you share it intentionally.

Steps (website)

  1. Go to FamilySearch.org, and click Create Account.
  2. Click the Facebook icon.
  3. Enter your Facebook username and password.
  4. Click Log In. Facebook will ask you to allow FamilySearch to obtain your name, profile picture, and email address. This information will be added to your FamilySearch account.
  5. Click the Continue button.
  6. Select if you would like to receive messages from FamilySearch about updates, events, and ancestors.

Note: For members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, if you would like to add your Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints membership information, select the second option. Selecting this option will trigger text fields to drop down to add your birth date and Church record number.

  7. Click Continue with Facebook.
  8. You can include a mobile number and a birth date. This information along with your email will help determine if a duplicate account has already been created.
  9. Click Continue with Facebook.

If a duplicate account is found you will get a notification informing you that an existing FamilySearch account has been found. You will then be directed to sign in using your FamilySearch account or to recover your username or password. After signing in with your existing FamilySearch account, Facebook will be added as a sign-in option.
Note: As of September 6, 2023, deleted accounts will NOT be able to re-use usernames.

Notice

This option is currently available via desktop or web access. At a later date, it will be available for mobile access in the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store for patrons to update.
