Full Name Review Overview
What is Full Name Review?
With Full Name Review, your task is to compare the name in a historical document with the name that the computer transcribed. The names should be indexed correctly. If you see a mistake in the transcription, you can correct it. This simple contribution makes it possible for someone else to find the ancestor during a record search.
Locate Full Name Review:
- From the FamilySearch website, click the tab titled Get Involved. Next, click Opportunities. You will see an option for starting Full Name Review about halfway down the page.
- Click, Get Started.
- Select the country or location you would like.
- Click Search.
Full Name Review Process:
Full Name Review Step 1: Is this person’s full name highlighted?
Step 1: Look at the document and decide if a complete name has been correctly highlighted. If you determine that the highlighted areas are not a person, click Not a Person.
Step 2: Check for prefixes, suffixes, maiden names, and married names. You'll be able to add or remove highlights in the next step.
- If everything appears correct, click Yes. Go to Full Name Review Step 3.
- If a highlight needs to be added, adjusted, or removed, click No. Go to Full Name Review Step 2.
- If you are unsure, click Unsure. A pop-up window will allow you to review other names.

Find helpful instructions and tips in the panel on the right.
Step 1: To add a new highlight, click the name or initial that should be highlighted. If needed, drag the edge of the highlight to cover the entire name. Then, click Attach.
- Repeat these steps if any other parts of the individual's name needs to be highlighted.
- Be sure to look for prefixes or suffixes such as “Mrs.,” “Mr.,” or “Jr,” to make sure they are highlighted.
Step 2: To remove a highlight, click the name or word that is highlighted. Then, click Detach.
Step 3: If everything appears correct, click Next. Go to Full Name Review Step 3.
Full Name Review Step 3: Drag the name parts to the correct label and order.
The highlights should now be correct for the entire name.
Step 1: Review the name fields on the right-side panel.
Step 2: Click on a name in the column to see which name it is attached to in the document. The highlight color will change from yellow to blue to identify that it is attached to the name you clicked on.
Step 3: Decide if the computer has organized the name correctly.
- The given name for the individual should be in the Given Name field.
- The surname for the individual should be in the Surname field.
- If a name in the column is in the incorrect field, click the name, and drag it to the correct field in the name column.
Step 5: If another name field should be added, such as a name prefix, click the Add or Remove Fields.
Step 4: Click the necessary name field and then click, Save Fields.
Step 5: Drag the correct name to that field.
Step 6: If a name field needs to be removed, click Add of Remove Fields.
Step 7: Click the "X" on the unnecessary name field and then click, Save Fields.
Step 8: Once the names are in the correct field, click Next to go to Full Name Review step 4.
Full Name Review Step 4: Correct the spelling of each part of this person’s name.
Step 1: Review the spelling of the person's name to make sure it matches the document.
Step 2: If everything appears correct, click Done to finish the Full Name Review.
