"Rice and Sarah Bennett
Children of Rice [Bennett] and Sarah DeBorjnack
[1] Mary Bennett, born about 1753 of Cumberland Co., Virginia (living 25 October 1773).
[2] William Bennett, born about 1755 of Cumberland Co., Virginia, died between March and May 1823 in Sumner Co., Tenn., married about 1776 to Catherine Bernard.
[3] John Bennett, born about 1757, of Cumberland Co., Virginia (living April 4, 1796), probably in Pittsylvania, County, Virginia, probably married bond dated 26 November 1785- Judith Hubbard, daughter of John Hubbard, who gave his consent (showing she was under age) in Prince Edward County, Virginia.
[2]William Bennet, son of Rice and Sarah Bennett, born about 1755, probably in Prince Edward Co., Virginia. He was under the age 20 when his father made him(sic) will, 5 August 1770, but on the 24th of May 1773, he was a witness, since his eldest son Elisha when married 20 November 1797 was under age and hence was born not earlier that 1776 the date of William's birth can be closely approximated as above. It is the family tradition that he served in the Revolution side with his brother, and that his brother was killed, but William was at Yorktown when Lord Cornwallis surrendered, this virtually ending the war. It can be seen by the evidence submitted that the brother John actually survived the war and was living in 1796. A number of William Bennett's served with the Virginia troops, but it is difficult to identify the record of our ancestor. This entry by the process of eliminating the other William Bennetts who served appear most likely to relate to this record.
William Bennett (Va.) Soldier Virginia Continental Army 23 July 1777, second Lieutenant 1 December 1777, resigned 13 April 1778. he married probably Catherine Bernard or Barnett, daughter of William Bernard (also written Barnett) and Mary Fleming the daughter of Major John Fleming (son of Charles Fleming and Susanah Tarleton) and Mary Bolling (daughter of John Bolling and Mary Kennon, granddaughter of Col. Robert Bolling and Jane Rolfe and great-granddaughter of John Rolfe and Pocahontas). This marriage in all probability occurred in Cumberland Co., Va., but it is not found on record for about 60% of the marriage bonds in that county are missing."
