What is in This Collection?

This collection contains index & images of electoral records from the Greater Manchester area. The right to vote was limited until passage of the 1928 Equal Franchise Act (Representation of the People Act, 1928) granted voting rights to men and women at the age of 21[1].

Under the Representation of the People Act 1918 women over 30 years of age who resided in the constituency amd occupying land or premises with a rateable value above £5, or whose husbands met these requirements were granted the right to vote[2].

This collection includes the following:

• Parliamentary registers: persons eligible to vote in Parliamentary elections
• Burgess rolls: residents of a town or borough with full rights of citizenship eligible to vote in local government elections
• Parochial registers: persons eligible to vote in local parish elections
• Citizen rolls for the city of Manchester City: residents of Manchester with the right to vote in municipal elections
