The cemetery was established in 1853 on property acquired from Martin Layman. The cemetery is recognized as a socially significant site in the city, and serves as the final resting place for many pioneers and military veterans. It is also known as Minneapolis Pioneers and Soldiers Memorial Cemetery. In 2005 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
