Edward Joseph McCarthy was born in 1874 in Ireland, the son of Martin and Bridget McGrath McCarthy. He married May Ann McGawley (1876-1912) in 1903 in Lancashire, England. She was born at Bacup, England, the daughter of Michael McGawley from County Mayo, Ireland and Mary Ann Hayes McGawley from County, Galway, Ireland. Martin and Mary Ann McCathy had three children, 1905-1909. The family immigrated to the United States in 1905 and settled at Chicago, Illinois. Their daughter, Ellen Mary "Nellie" (1907-1950) was born in 1907 in Cook County, Illinois. She married William Alton Allen (1904-1950) in 1925. They had eight children, 1926-1939. After their parents' deaths, the children were raised by their mother's brother, Edward Joseph McCarthy (1909-1965) of Cook County, Illinois.
Includes a section on the military experiences of Edward Joseph McCarthy (1909-1965), who served in the 143rd Armored Signal Company, 3rd Arm'd Div. in Europe during World War II. .
Includes information on the Allen family, tracing line of descent from John Allen (1726-1754), son of William Allen (b. 1692). John Allen died at Albermarle County, Virginia to William Alton Allen (1904-1950). .
