Notes

Cover title: Carter and Duffield family history.

John Carter lived in Virginia beginning in 1635 and he married five wives, having been a widower four times. His first wife was Jane Glyn, the daughter of Morgan Glyn. Their children were George, Elizabeth and John Jr. John's second wife was Elinor Eltonhead, the widow of Captain William Brocas and the daughter of Richard Eltonhead. After her death, John married Anne Carter, the daughter of Cleave Carter. Anne had no children. John's fourth wife was named Sarah Ludlow, the mother of Sarah and Robert. John's fifth wife was named Elizabeth Sherley, and she was the mother of Charles. Descendants moved to Tennessee. George Duffield and his wife Margaret immigrated from Ireland to Pennsylvania and then to Tennessee around 1798. A descendant also named George married Sarah or Sallie Carter. Their grandaughter, Elizabeth, married Alfred W. Taylor. Another descendant, Landon Duffield, married Susannah Stout, the granddaughter of Abraham Lowe. Other localities include Georgia.
