The first generation Maxwell was James Maxwell (b. ca. 1640) in Calderwood, Scotland. His sons, John and Edward, emigrated ca. 1725 to Pennsylvania and then to Albemarle County, Virginia. John was born about 1690 in northern Ireland orScotland and died 17 January 1786 in Rockbridge County, Virginia.
