Notes

The India Office Library has catalogued these records under the Accountant General's office, and given them the title of "Home establishment records, ca. 1800-1949." They are also more commonly known as civilian service records.

Note that while dates may overlap, the names found in these registers are different. Accessing these records by a known locality (in which an ancestor served) requires a search of each volume. Over time, some surnames changed spelling.

"Includes lists, mostly annual, of civil an uncovenanted servants, and statements of civil establishment for the Government of India and the provincial governments; also some lists of employees of the India Forest, Public Works, and Post Office departments and the Burma Railway Company."--p. 174 of M. Moir's "A General guide to the India Office records".

Many volumes have indexes or are arranged alphabetically by first letter of surname.
