John Douglas Starret (Sterrett) was born in 1748 near Londonderry, Ireland. He was married in 1784 at Londonderry to Ann Reid, born in 1752 near Londonderry. After arriving in the U.S. in 1795-6 they settled for a time in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Before the turn of the century they moved to Craigsville, Augusta Co., Virginia where John was a storekeeper. John died 4 Dec. 1831 on the Little Calfpasture River, Rockbridge County, Virginia. Ann died at the same place, 22 Apr. 1838.

One of their children, Robert Starret (Sterrett), was born 11 June 1789 at Gortree Hill, Glendermott Parish, County Londonderry, Ireland. Robert married Isabella Dunlap, born 20 Oct. 1794 in Summerdean, Va. on 12 Dec. 1818 in Summerdean. Robert died 20 Dec. 1861 at Bell's Valley on Little Calfpasture River, Rockbride, Virginia. Isabella died in March 1866 also at Bell's Valley.
