A bond is a legal document wherein a person commits himself, his heirs, executors and administrators to pay a required amount of money to another if certain duties are not performed. These bonds were given to show that the plaintiffs or defendants will obey orders of the court.
For these bonds the court sat in chancery which meant it acted as a court of equity. Equity law is a body of legal and procedural rules and doctrines which supplement or override common and statute law to protect rights and enforce duties defined or fixed by substative law. The court usually dealt with cases which did not need a jury, such as divorces or foreclosures. The bonds were registered with the clerk of the Circuit Court.
