The name of Woolwine appears to be of German origin. The first known Woolwines in the United States are Philip, and his wife, Elizabeth, who appear in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1767. Their son, John (Johannes Wohlwein) was baptized in 1767. Daughter, Barbara, was baptized 2 years later. Philip leased land in 1774 in Frederick County, Virginia. In October of 1784, Philip was listed in a land record as late of the Borough of Winchester but now of the town of Stanton in Augusta County, Virginia. Philip died in Augusta County about October of 1786. His wife, Elizabeth was last found there in 1820 census. The following are the known children of Philip and Elizabeth were: Philip S.
