William Jansen Traphagen (1616-1699) was born at Lemgo, in the Principality of Lippe, Germany, the son of Johannes Trophaegen. He immigrated to America, ca. 1648 and settled at New Amsterdam. He married three times and was the father of five children, born ca. 1656-ca. 1668, at New Amsterdam and Bushwick, New Netherlands. He died at Kingston, New York. His son, Hendrick Traphagen (ca. 1668-ca. 1723) married Sarah Kierstede (1671-after 1723) ca. 1797 in Ulster County, New York. They had eight children, 1698-1713. The family migrated to Raritan, Somerset County, New Jersey, ca. 1711. Descendants listed lived in New Jersey, New York, Illinois, Nebraska, and elsewhere. Some descendants spelled their surname Traphagan. Record lists children and grandchildren of each generation but chiefly follows line of descent to Robert Isaac Traphagan (1855-1918). He was born in Hancock, Illinois, the son of Alexander J. Traphagan (1816-1869). He married Clara Melinda Colgan (1858-1917) in 1877 at Wyoming, Stark County, Illinois. They had thirteen children, 1878-1902. The family moved to Stark County, Iowa, in 1881, returned to Stark County, Illinois, ca. 1885, moved to Nebraska, ca. 1890. Robert and Clara Traphagan died at McCook, Red Willow County, Nebraska. Descendants listed lived in Nebraska,.
