Frederick Barham Ragland (1813-1897) was born in Chatham County, North Carolina, the son of Frederick and Mary Barham Ragland. He married Elizabeth Winslow Springfield (1815-1884) in 1833. They migrated to Tennessee in 1834. They were the parents of at least six children. Elizabeth Ragland died while visiting a daughter of Jackson, Tennessee. He married 2) Mrs. Malinda Scruggs (1821-1890) in 1885, and according to the addenda 3) Mrs. Bradley Kerr. He was living at Brownsville, Tennessee in 1891.

Text and addenda include some information about ancestors and some of their descendants.

F. B. Ragland's great grandfather, John Ragland, married a kinswoman, Ann Beaufort. They had ten children. The family emigrated from near Ragland Castle, Wales, between 1700 and 1720 and settled in Henrico County, Virginia. Their son, William Ragland, migrated from Virginia and settled on the Cape Fear River in Chatham County, North Carolina. He married Sarah Avent. They had ten or eleven children. His will was dated 1788. Their son, Frederick Ragland (1766-1812) married Mary Barham (1775-1851) in 1795. They had six children, 1797-1812. Their daughter, Nancy Ragland (1803-1884), married William H. Cross (1797-1870). They had ten children. Their daughter, Louisa Frances Cross (1840-1915), married Benjamin Rush Avent (d. 1862). They had two children, 1857-1861. She married 2) John Thomas Judd (1843-1914) of Buckhorn Township, Wake County, North Carolina, in 1866. They had nine children.
