Chancery papers, ca. 1860-1950

Manuscript/Manuscript on Film
Richmond, Virginia : Virginia State Library, 1978
115 microfilm reels ; 35 mm.

Microfilm of original records at the Franklin County Courthouse in Rocky Mountain, Virginia.

For these cases the Circuit Court sat in chancery which meant it acted as a court of equity. Equity law is a body of legal and procedural rules and doctrines which supplement or override common and statute law to protect rights and enforce duties defined or fixed by substantive law. The court usually dealt with cases which did not need a jury, such as divorces or foreclosures.

Dates given are probably case dates. Documents for a case may be dated much earlier, some as early as 1858.

Contains loose documents, such as court orders, decrees, injunctions, receipts, wills, bonds, sales of land and bonds, reports, etc.

Some documents have darkened with age or handwriting has faded which makes them hard to read.

Film title boards may give dates which differ from the ones shown below.
