Los libros de los fondos antiguos contienen "documentos varios" a saber: capellanías, cofradías, escrituras notariales, notas, fondos píos, diezmos, autos, fábricas, cuentas de cargo, pregones, órdenes, quejas, pruebas, renuncias, demandas, testamentos, bulas, etc. y también "información matrimonial," a saber demandas matrimoniales, petición de matrimonio, divorcios, dispensas matrimoniales, expedientes matrimoniales, etc.
Las cajas y documentos no están todos en orden cronológico.
Incluye documentación de otras localidades fuera de San José, a saber Nicoya, Alajuela, y Cartago.
