Chiefly parental ancestral families and relatives of the author's grandfather, William Daniel Gooch (1882-1948). He was born in Colorado City, Mitchell County, Texas, the son of Dr. William Daniel Gooch (1851-1892) and Louretta Fulton Gooch. His father was a druggist, farmer, doctor, and city marshall in Colorado City. He was killed in a gun fight. After his father's death, his mother took her family to live with her mother in Lometa, Texas. William went to Mexico, ca. 1902, to look for work and ended up in Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, working for the Cananea Consolidated Copper Company owned by Col. William Greene. He married Vida Viola Burns, a native of California and adopted daughter of Col. Greene in Chicago in 1922. They had two children.
Ancestors include: John Gooch (ca. 1705-1793) of Virginia and Granville County, North Carolina -- Capt. Samuel Sneed (1723-1806) of Granville County, North Carolina -- Thomas Dudley (b. ca. 1710) of Caroline County, Virginia -- William Jones (1723-1804) of Northumerland and Brunswick Counties, Virginia; and Granville County, North Carolina -- Steven Ragland (1688-1747) of New Kent County, Virginia and Bertie County, North Carolina -- Patrick O'Briant (ca. 1740-1804) of Granville County, North Carolina.
