"This study has been made on the Towles family of South Carolina in search of the ancestry of one James Towles, who went from Newberry Co., S. C., sometime circa 185_ (?) to Bryan County, Ga. The Towles family originated Virginia as is shown by data in the Revolutionary files in South Carolina State Archives when on Oliver Towles stated he was born in Virginia. Middlesex County, Va. and the adjacent counties seem to have been the first home to the Towles family in Virginia.".
Contains extracts of Towles records from South Carolina land grants, Virginia church records, estate and land records, Abbeville County, South Carolina, census records, U. S. Revolutionary pension records, etc. Also traces descent from Capt. Oliver Tolwes (b. ca. 1734) of Virginia and South Carolina, to Beatrice Towles Perry (1879-1916), mother of Alma Perry Livingston.
