The original volumes were formerly entitled: The medical and surgical history of the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865.

Volume 1 of the reprint edition consists of names abstracted from Index volumes 2 and 3, arranged in order by state and unit. This volume was compiled to assist in the research of particular service units, states, and battles; therefore, please note that all of the references in Index volume 1 are contained in Index volumes 2 and 3. Thus, unless you are looking for information about a particular state or unit, your use of this index will be confined to Index volumes 2 and 3.
