The McCoun family originated in Scotland. James MacCoun, Sr. (1716- ) was born in northern Ireland. He descended from a Scottish family which had immigrated to northern Ireland with the the general Scottish migration. James immigrated to America in the mid-seventeen hundreds and married Margaret Walker (1717-1784) in 1744. They were the parents of ten children. In 1779 James and his family moved to Kentucky where they settled on the Salt River. Their numerous descendants live in Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, California and elsewhere.

Includes Adams, Cardwell, Lacey, Ledgerwood, McAfee, McGee, Stewart, Woods and related families.
