Notes

Microfilm of original records at Virginia State Library and Archives in Richmond, Virginia.

The 1799-1816 census records seem to be special censuses taken by the city of Alexandria. The 1830 census is a handwritten copy of the Fifth federal census of the United States which was filed with the clerk of the Circuit Court.

The agency responsible for the 1799-1816 censuses could not be readily identified. The 1799 census says it was taken by the "warden" and the 1808 census was taken by the "supt. pol.". It was decided to place the records under the clerk of Corporation Court because it is the agency now responsible for them.

The 1830 federal census contains information for Alexandria County and includes the city of Alexandria.

Alexandria County became Arlington County in 1920.

Information for each census varies. Most give the name of the household (or housekeeper), number of white children (under age 16), number of white adults (over 16), number of slaves (both over and under 16 years), and number of freed "coloured" people. Some census records give the occupation of the heads of household, number of hirelings or apprentices, number and occupation of boarders, and other information.
