George Chapman, a Revolutionary War soldier, was born in 1747 at Winchester, Virginia, the son of William Chapman (b. 1724). He married Joanna Lemaster (1753-1843), daughter of Abraham and Rachel Lemaster, in 1775 in Berkeley County, Virginia. They had seven children, 1777-1785. He died in 1812 at New Cumberland, West Virginia. Descendants lived in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Iowa, California, Oklahoma, and elsewhere throughout the United States.

Includes the Shelly/Shelley, Swearingen, Van Vliet, Ward, Woods, and other related families.
