Peter Pearson (1679-1735), a quaker, and the son of Christopher Pearson and Elinor Fearon, emigrated from his native county, Cumberland (since 1974 part of the new county of Cumbria), England in 1707. He settled in Nansemond Co., Virginia. He married Rachel Newby (d. 1750) a few years after he settled in Virginia. Family also lived in Perquimans Co., North Carolina. Descendants live in North Carolina, Tennessee and elsewhere.
