This series consists of reports filed by the Chancery Court, later the Circuit Court, monthly with the Bureau of Vital Statistics. Each report of divorces granted lists names, ages, and places of birth and marriage for each couple, dates of marriages, date petition was filed, to whom the divorce was granted, alleged grounds for divorce, number of minor children, date of decree, and if any alimony was granted. The series is arranged chronologically by year of divorce, thereunder alphabetical by county name.
For divorces occuring from 1818-1864: Divorces once required an act of legislature. The above years were compiled by the Alabama Department of Archives and History Division of Records Management from the Acts of Alabama. Includes names, complainant, respondent, year of act, and page number from acts. Some include the county of residence. To find person searching for be sure to check both items with the above dates -- each item is slightly different and may give additional information.
