James Greer (1627-1688) emigrated to the American colonies in 1675 and settled in Baltimore Co., Maryland near the Gunpowder River. He married Ann Taylor, the daughter of Arthur Taylor of Gunpowder River, Baltimore Co., MD. Their son John Greer married Sarah Day, the daughter of Nicholas Day of Baltimore Co. They were parents of nine children. Their son William Greer married Ann Fitch and they were the parents of nine children. William and Ann moved to Franklin Co., VA. Their son William, Jr. moved to Bedford Co., VA. A son Moses, married Ann Nancy Bailey and died in 1834 in Franklin Co., VA. Other descendants moved to North Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi and elsewhere.

Includes Taylor, Fitch, Harkrider, Phelps, Tillery, Merrill and other related families.
