The patriarch of this family, Levin Gray, was born abt. 1765 probably in North Carolina, England or in Virginia. He married (1) Amelia Parker in 1786 in Guilford Co., N.C. Family moved from North Carolina to Warren Co., Tenn. and thence to Madison Co., Ala. before 1810. They were in Limestone Co., Ala. before 1820. He married (2) abt. 1827 Sarah H. Wade Slaughter, widow of James Slaughter. The first known ancestor of the Powers family was John Powers, a shoe maker, born abt. 1805 in N.C., and married Mary ? abt. 1831 in Tenn. She was born abt. 1808 in Georgia. Family appears in 1850 census of Giles Co., Tennessee. Thomas Holden Wade was born ca. 1720 possibly in England. He married Jane Boggan ca. 1743 probably in Virginia. He was granted land in Surry Co., Va. in 1746, and had moved by 1747 to North Carolina, where his son, George Wade, was born in Granville County in 1747.
