Notes

This microfilm publication reproduces a card index to general correspondence of the Record and Pension Office, 1889-1904.

"Most of the index cards reproduced on this microfilm publication are to names of soldiers. Each card gives, in addition to the name of the soldier, the organization in which he served, the name of the person or office who made the inquiry, the subject of the inquiry, and the file number. Included are many similar indexes, especially to names of volunteer organizational units and of States; some subjects are also included"--Introd.

"The index cards are arranged alphabetically, but there are some variations. Names of persons are arranged according to a Soundex or phonetic system--names pronounced the same but spelled differently are filed together and arranged alphabetically according to given names. For example, "Nease,' 'Neece,' 'Neass,' and 'Nece' are filed as 'Neece'. A card on which all variant spellings are listed precedes such index cards. In addition, for each name there usually is a cross-reference card that indicates the spelling under which the index card is filed"--Introd.
