William Garten (d. 1709) of Lancaster and Spotsylvania, Virginia, purchased land in 1684. His descendant, James Garten, was born in 1788 at Fort Loudon, North Carolina, the son of Elijah Garten (1758-1840). He married Elizabeth Sears (1791-1824) in Knox County, Kentucky, in 1812. They had six children, 1814-1824. Twins died with their mother in 1824. The family moved to Lawrence County, Indiana, ca. 1816. He married 2) Lydia Gray (1806-1853), daughter of John Gray. They had five children, 1826-1841. He married 3) Sarah Amanda Laughlin (1820-1890) in 1854. She had a daughter, Henrietta, who took the Garten name. He died in 1874. Descendants lived in Indiana, Illinois,.
