The emigrant ancestor, William Emerson, was a merchant from England and landed in Virginia in 1618 on the ship Sampson. William Emerson, Sr. (b. ca. 1710) was born in or at least lived in Virginia where his three sons were born, and later removed to Fayette Co., Kentucky. At least two sons, Tilley and Reuben, were born in Caroline Co., Va. Descendants live in Illinois, California, Missouri, Virginia and elsewhere.
