Hartland was named in May, 1733, with proprietors' privileges and duties. The town, now in Hartford County, was incorporated in May, 1761. The First Ecclesiastical Society of Hartland was established in 1761. The Second or West Society was set off in 1779. The First Church in Hartland (East) was organized in 1768 and its first edifice was erected in 1770.
