Norfolk County became extinct in 1963 when it was consolidated with the city of South Norfolk to form the independent city of Chesapeake.

Port of entry records were usually recorded by a naval officer appointed by the state. However, these records do not give the position or title of the person recording them.

Most volumes are individually index. Volumes 1782-1791 and 1840-1850 are not indexed.
