Abstracts are on cards which are in alphabetical order by name. Information on the cards varies but gives at least a name, the date of the event or newspaper, and the newspaper's name.

Some cards may be out of order.

"The marriage notices and obituaries in this file are drawn from Virginia newspapers, with the exception of entries on colored cards or marked with an 'X', which come from out-of-state papers. ...Note - all entries from out-of-state papers are entered on colored cards except National Intelligencer entries which are marked with an 'X'." - cards
