Birth records, 1853-1896 and marriage records, 1782-1913; general indexes to marriage & birth registers, 1778-1918

Notes

The commissioner of the revenue registered births and deaths for the county and then turned his books over to the clerk of the County Court. The clerk made abstracts to send to the state auditor and would also preserve the books in his office.

The licenses were issued by the clerk of the County Court. In 1904 this was changed to the clerk of the Circuit Court.

Entries 1782-1866 in marriage registers, v. 1 and 1-A, were transcribed from the original registers of bonds or licenses. Entries 1854-1865 in marriage register v. 1-A were probably transcribed from the original register of marriages.

The registers of births (original and transcript) gives date of birth, name of child, sex, race (if before 1864 and "colored", whether slave or free), if born alive or dead, birthplace, fathers name (if before 1864, slave owner's name), father's occupation and residence, mothers name, how many born at the birth, deformity or any circumstances of interest (transcripts do not have this field), sources of information and relationship of informant to person born. Information is not always complete.

Entries 1782-1866 in marriage registers, v. 1 and 1-A, give names of husband and wife, date of marriage, and sometimes the father's name of the wife and/or the minister who performed the marriage. Entries 1854-1865 in marriage register v. 1-A give date and place of marriage, full name of husband and wife, age, single or widowed, birthplaces, residences, parents names, husbands occupation, and name of person performing marriage ceremony.

Record of marriages, 1782-1830, give names of parties married, date and by whom. Record of marriages, 1826-1853, gives the same information until 1850. From 1850-1853 it gives date of license, parties names, certificate of marriage (when and by whom), and sometimes name of the wife's father. Registers of marriages (licenses) for 1854-1866, 1866-1875 and 1898-1908 give the same information found in the 1850-1853 entries of the previous record.

Includes general index. Birth register, v. 1, 1853-1870, is also individually indexed.

Microfilm of original records and transcripts at the Rockbridge County Courthouse in Lexington, Virginia.
