The church was organized in 1877 as the Clear Lake Lafayette Methodist Episcopal Church which had two buildings. One was Clear Lake Church in Cornish Township in Sibley County and the other was the Svenska Methodist Episdopal Kyrkan (Swedish Methodist Church) in Clear Lake which seems to be in Lafayette Township, Nicollet County. The two churches may have been known as Clear Lake and New Sweden Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1906 a church was built in Lafayette and the Swedish Methodist congregation move there. The name was changed to the First Methodist Church although it may have been known as the Lafayette-Clear Lake Methodist Episcopal Church. The two churches later merged under the name of United Methodist Church in Lafayette. It may be also be called Lafayette United Methodist Church or Lafayette Methodist Church.
File for Clear Lake Lafayette Methodist Episcopal contains a history "Churches of Lafayette" (2 leaves, typescript) (document no. M-101). File for Lafayette United Methodist Church contains certicate, an article, 1978 centennial program, etc. File for Lafayette Methodist Church contains history "The History of the Lafayette Methodist Church" / Mrs. Emil Lindquist. ([1959?], [8] leaves, holograph).
