The church was organized in 1859 as the Evangelisch Lutherische Immanuels Gemeinde U.A.C. (Unaltered Augsburg Confessions) zu Nicollet und Courtland Townships. It was later called Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church and probably served both the town and township of Courtland. The name is sometimes shortened to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
