John Michael Tomey was in 1834 in Augusta County, Virginia, the son of Michael and Mary Lockridge Tomey. The family migrated to Indiana 1835. John married Catharine Mariah Prickett, daughter of Abraham and Hannah Jolliffe Prickett, in 1858. They had two sons, Josephus, and Richard, before John enlisted in the army. After his return, they had three daughters, Elizabeth Ellen, Mary Hannah, and Julia Angeline. He died at Martinsville, Indiana, in 1919. He was in Tullahoma, Tennessee, when the diary begins in 1864.
Diary pertains primarily to the military history of the 27th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.
