Notes

Microfilm of original records at the York County Courthouse in Yorktown, Virginia.

The commissioner of the revenue registered births and deaths for the county and then turned his books or loose pages over to the clerk of the County Court. The clerk made abstracts to send to the state auditor and would also preserve the books in his office.

These register pages were probably the rough record kept for the year and then copied into the official marriage registers. They cover only York District in the county.

Register of births gives the line number, date of birth, child's name, white or "colored" (free or slave), sex, born alive or dead, place of birth, name of father or owner, father's occupation and residence, how many at birth, deformity or any circumstances of interest, and source of information (name and relation to child).

Register of deaths gives line number, name of deceased, white or "colored" (free or slave), name of owner, sex, date and place of death, cause of death, age, name of parents, birthplace, occupation, marital status, and source of information (name and if doctor, relative, etc.).
