"Between 1903 and 1916 The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record published four series of abstracted English records that are reprinted in this book. All four series were inspired by Henry FitzGilbert Waters (1823-1913), who described his method as searching English records 'between certain dates, seriatim, keeping a sharp look out for everything possibly indicative of the slightest connection with known American families. Most of the records contained in this book are wills of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, often mentioning one or more of the Thirteen Colonies"--Introd.

Contains a reprint of the following genealogical articles that have been previously published: Clues from English Archives contributory to American genealogy by J. Henry Lea and J. R. Hutchinson -- New York gleanings in England by Lothrop Withington. Including "Gleanings" by Henry F. Waters -- Genealogical notes from the High Court of Admiralty Examinations, by J.R. Hutchinson -- A digest of Essex wills. With particular reference to names of importance in the American Colonies, by William Gilbert.
