James H. Wallis was born in the Whitechapel district of London, England, in 1861, the son of James and Jane Sarah Booth Wallis. His family moved to Cheshire in 1873. There he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1877 and moved to Liverpool to work as a printer for the Millennial Star. He met Elizabeth Todd, daughter of Robert Samuel and Charlotte Cutts Todd, in Liverpool. The betrothed couple immigrated to Utah in 1881 and were married in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City. They had fifteen children, 1882-1907. James, newspaperman and a lawyer, and his family lived in a number of places in Utah and Idaho. He served several missions for the Church; was a Bishop of the Vernal First Ward; and was patriarch in England and in the Ensign and the Emigration Stakes. He died in Salt Lake City in 1940.
