The earliest ancestor of this family was John Jeter, who lived in Essex County (now Caroline), Virginia in 1704. Most of his earlier descendants were tobacco planters with large plantations and slaves as the major source of labor. Many descendants remained in Virginia while others began migrating southward to the Carolinas, Tennessee, Kentuc- ky, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, California and elsewhere.
