The Northern Neck area contains the counties of Lancaster, Richmond, Northumberland, King George, Westmoreland, Stafford, Prince William, Fauquier, Loudoun, and Fairfax. It may also contain the counties of Frederick, Culpeper, Shenandoah, Rappahannock, Clarke, Warren, Page, and part of West Virginia.

Northern Neck Proprietary existed from 1690-1781 and its records were later transferred to the Virginia Land Office.
