Notes

Microfilm of original records at the Coffee County courthouses one in Elba and one in Enterprise, Alabama.

NOTE: This county was established 29 Dec. 1841 from Dale County and has two (2) courthouses. One at Elba and a second at Enterprise what was established in 1907. The first courthouse was a Wellborn and was destroyed by fire in 1851. In 1863 a band of Confederate deserters and other renegades known as "Ward's Raiders" burned the new courthouse at Elba (which was 5 years old at the time), as well as the bridge across Pea River in a failed effort to escape the Home Guard. THe records stored since 1863 at Elba were entirely submerged by a flood of Pea River in March 1929, at which time floodwaters reached the twelve (12) foot mark on the records vault wall. Some records survived better than others. Nearly all show evidence of water damage.

Includes direct (grantor) and indirect (grantee) index.
