James Westmoreland (b.1635) came to America in 1652. He was the son of Thomas Westmoreland of Westmoreland County, England and a descendent of the Earls of Westmorland who were of the House of Neville. James arrived first in Boston but eventually settled in Virginia. His descendents are scattered throughout the United States. One of James Westmoreland's descendents was Olin Emmett Westmoreland (1864-1950). He was born in South Carolina and was the grandfather of the author. In 1889 Olin married Palmyra Augusta Jones (1871-1950) and they were the parents of eleven children.
