Chiefly ancestors, relatives, and descendants of the author. George W. Pirtle was born in 1902 in the Howe Valley community, Hardin County, Kentucky, the son of Thomas Louis Pirtle (1876-1952) and Laura Shipley Pirtle (1875-1956). After graduating with a masters of science degree in geology in 1924, he moved to Texas where he worked with oil companies. He married El Freda Taylor in 1928. They had a son born in 1929 at Coleman, Texas. His son and grandchildren were living in Texas in 1976.

Ancestors include: Henry Pirtle (ca. 1748-1834), a Revolutionary War soldier, of Germany, Virginia, and Kentucky -- George Klinglesmith (1766-1858) of Pennsylvania and Kentucky -- Adam Shipley (d. before 1678) of England and Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
