William Short (d.1676) immigrated from England to Surry County, Virginia. Descendants and relatives lived in Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and elsewhere. Throughout the family members were active in politics, diplomacy, education, medicine, religion, etc. They wanted to liberate their slaves and send them to Liberia, under the auspices of the American Colonization Society, but only one slave took advantage of the offer.
