This church was originally a branch of the church at East Haddam and was known as the East Haddam Baptist Church in Saybrook (Petepaug Society). It became independent in 1811 and was known as the Second Baptist Church of Saybrook until 1852, when it became the First Baptist Church of Essex. The Society connected with this church, organized in 1826, was dissolved in 1896.

Includes records of meetings of the First Baptist Church and Society, record of organization of church, admissions and dismissals, list of members, treasurer's accounts, sale of pews, etc.
